Description: The design for the memorial was chosen by competition. The competition for the memorial was held just before the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, and the monument completed just after the centennial. It not only represents Commodore Perry’s victory over the British during the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, but also the lasting friendship between the United State, Great Britain, and Canada. The memorial is currently owned and operated by the United States National Park Service.
